The last three lines show the seriousness of it all and the last line adds a bit of comedy to the whole thing showing that the character doesn't take it too seriously. The author wants to make us relate to the character by letting us see in her mind and the rest of the book also gives us information about the other characters as we see their thoughts written down in their exam writing which is included in the book and a good way of putting their personalities across.
